Strength
Astrology
Ruled by Leo (obviously!) and the Sun, Strength channels radiant self-confidence, courage, and heart-led resilience. The lion in the card mirrors Leo’s bold spirit, while the Sun symbolizes clarity, vitality, and a strong sense of self. This card reminds you to lead with warmth and integrity.
Historic Interest
In early Marseille decks, Strength was numbered XI and Justice VIII, but the Rider-Waite-Smith deck reversed them to align Strength with the astrological sign Leo. In alchemical symbolism, the lion represents primal forces like desire, rage, or instinct—qualities that must be transformed through inner work rather than suppressed. (Source: Robert M. Place, The Tarot: History, Symbolism, and Divination, 2005)
The Strength tarot card represents inner strength, emotional resilience, and empowered compassion. It encourages you to stay grounded, present, and self-assured, even in the face of fear, anger, or uncertainty. This card is a reminder that true courage is not about controlling others or yourself. It is about showing up with grace, trusting your instincts, and standing in your own quiet power.
Vibe
Empowered strength with courage and compassion that stands its ground.
Affirmation
“I am strong, grounded, and guided by compassion.”
Card Pairing
Strength + The Emperor.
This pairing explores the balance between internal and external power. Strength teaches grounded self-mastery, while The Emperor brings order, structure, and compassionate authority. Together, they ask: how can you lead without dominating, and stay soft without losing control?
Kindred Spirit
King of Cups. The King of Cups is Strength’s perfect counterpart: emotionally intelligent, steady, and quietly powerful. Where she offers grounded courage and fierce compassion, he brings calm wisdom and emotional depth. He doesn’t try to tame her lion. He simply knows how to sit beside it with her. They are truly a power couple!
Esoteric Connection
Essential Oil: Ginger. Ginger is bold, grounding, and empowering, perfect for Strength’s energy. It stokes inner fire, boosts confidence, and supports you in standing your ground when life gets turbulent. A drop on the wrists or diffused during challenging moments can help you reconnect with your own resolve.
Element
Strength is ruled by Fire, the element of courage, drive, and willpower. This isn't a reckless flame, it’s a steady, intentional burn. Fire gives this card its vitality and boldness, but it’s tempered by control and heart. Strength teaches you to carry fire without letting it consume you.
Misconception
Strength is often misunderstood as being about stoicism or restraint…holding back emotion, keeping it together, pushing through. But that’s more Emperor energy. Strength isn’t about gritting your teeth. It’s about meeting your full emotional range with presence and grace. You don’t need to be calm to be powerful. You just need to be conscious.
Full Interpretation
“You don’t have to tame the lion. Just learn how to sit beside it.”
Strength is one of the least nuanced cards in the tarot deck. Its meaning is pretty straightforward: It reminds us that true power often looks like grace and compassion. Inner strength isn’t about domination, but about emotional maturity, presence, and love. The lion is still wild, but it trusts her. And she trusts herself.
The card explores courage, but not necessarily the kind that expects external validation. This is inner strength: the quiet power to stay calm in chaos, to love the parts of yourself that scare you, and to hold your ground without drawing blood. In most traditional decks, a woman tames a lion with nothing but presence. But in my version, I wanted to bring that idea into the real world.
In my woodburned illustration, I imagine this kneeling woman as an experienced naturalist or even a veterinarian. There is no fear in her expression, even though her hands are literally in the lion’s mouth. She’s just calmly, deliberately making contact: focused and grounded. She wears a flower wreath, signifying growth, beauty, and nature’s gentleness. There's no floating infinity above her head—instead, it's inked on her arm, as if to say: "This isn’t a mystical power. It’s something I chose. Something I earned."
Emotional Meaning & Symbolism
This card is a love letter to anyone who's learned to stay open and tender in a hard world. To the one who breathes through panic and becomes the calm in a crisis. To the parent who tries, every day, not to scream. To the woman who chooses kindness after heartbreak. To the man who finally lets himself cry. To the man who speaks gently even when he's angry. To the person who chooses love over ego, and presence over pride. To anyone who knows that tenderness is a strength, not a weakness.
The lion isn’t a metaphorical beast she’s keeping at bay. It’s right there, full scale, textured, real. It represents desire, fear, anger, impulse…every messy part of ourselves we grew up being told to “muzzle”. And instead of trying to tame those parts (or worse, slay them), the woman in this card chooses to work with them. She makes contact with the lion at eye level, without weapons or fear.
In the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, an infinity symbol hovers over her head signifies limitless spiritual power and inner strength. I like this interpretation, but decided it would be more powerful to have it tattooed on her arm as a permanent reminder that she chooses to practice this kind of strength every day. It’s a commitment to keep returning to love, to patience, to calm, even when it would be easier to rage or run. Because I choose to. Isn’t that the most radical kind of strength?
Real World Takeaways
You don’t have to fight it, but you do have to face it. Maybe there's a tough conversation you’ve been avoiding. Or a fear you keep outrunning. Strength says: you're ready. Take the risk. You won’t lose yourself.
Stay open, even when it would be easier to shut down. If someone hurt you, the temptation might be to put up walls. But Strength reminds you that tenderness is not weakness. It’s a choice that makes you powerful.
Your rage is valid. But how do you want to use it? You might feel furious about injustice, betrayal, or even your past trauma. This card doesn’t tell you to repress it. It invites you to channel it. Make it sacred.
You already have what you need. Whether you're preparing for something big (a move, a pitch, a leap) or just trying to survive another day, Strength says you’re not underprepared. This was foreshadowed in The Magician.
The wild part of you isn’t the enemy. Maybe you're trying to shut down your desire, your grief, your gut instincts. This card says: listen. That part of you has wisdom, too.
Not everyone will recognize or acknowledge your strength. That doesn’t mean it isn’t there. Walking away, staying, speaking up, staying quiet: none of these choices are inherently strong or weak. What matters is why you choose them.
In love and romance, Strength can be about choosing compassion over control. It asks: Are you trying to change your partner, or are you learning to understand them? Are you softening where it matters, and setting boundaries where it counts? Sometimes this card shows up when healing from heartbreak…when you're learning that staying open is the bravest thing of all.
In your career, Strength is reflected in negotiating calmly, managing burnout, and speaking up. You're leading with patience. Or maybe you're resisting the urge to quit everything and run away. This card validates your effort.
This card can show up in spiritual growth or shadow work as a sign that you're doing the most sacred kind of integration: the kind where you befriend the lion. You stop trying to "fix" your messy feelings and instead start listening to them. Strength says: nothing in you is too wild to be worthy of reverence, integration, and spiritual wholeness.
Pull this card when you're wondering if you can keep going. When you're afraid your softness is a liability. Strength is a reminder that you are already strong. Not because you're forceful, but because you are rooted, conscious, and willing to meet the moment with grace. And yes, it’s okay to roar. Just don’t let the roar be louder than your wisdom.
"Nothing in you is too wild to be worthy of reverence, integration, and spiritual wholeness."
Reversed Interpretation
When Strength appears reversed, it often signals a disruption in the relationship between you and your inner lion. Instead of meeting your fear with presence, you might be avoiding it altogether or trying to overpower it. Either way, you're no longer working with yourself. You're fighting yourself, or fleeing from yourself. That gets exhausting.
This reversal can show up when you’re ruled by reactivity: lashing out, withdrawing, suppressing, or spiraling. The roar is in charge now ,and while roaring is sometimes necessary, you can’t live there. You can’t build trust with yourself if you keep flinching from your own voice.
The infinity symbol becomes a mirror: Are you honoring your strength as a practice, or just performing it? Are you trying to “stay calm” by avoiding conflict? This card reversed doesn’t mean you’re weak. It probably means you're tired or overwhelmed. Lean into compassion, not control. (Try reflecting on The Emperor, too.)
Sometimes Strength reversed shows up when you’re clinging to power instead of softening into wisdom. Maybe you're trying to fix someone, or force a feeling away. Maybe you're putting on a brave face, but inside you’re flooded.
This card invites you to pause and remember: tenderness isn’t always easy. Grace doesn’t mean silence. And calm isn’t the same as disconnection. You are still strong, even when you fall apart. Especially when you’re willing to reconnect with the parts of yourself you’ve been trying to silence.
You don’t have to tame the lion right now. Just sit beside it again.
Pause and Reflect
Where in your life are you being asked to stay strong and stay present, and yet you'd rather shrink back or disappear? What if the invitation isn’t to endure, but simply to remain open, even when it’s uncomfortable? What if presence itself is the strength?
Take Action
Stand tall in a powerful posture: feet shoulder-width apart, toes gripping the ground, legs steady beneath you. Pull your shoulders back, expand your chest, and tighten your core. Imagine your spine growing taller with each breath. Inhale deeply through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth. Set a timer and hold this stance for one full minute. Take up space. Feel the weight of your own presence. Let your body remind you: you are strong, grounded, and unshakable. You can do this exercise anywhere: standing in line at the supermarket, waiting at a crosswalk, or just before walking into a difficult conversation.
